Overview
Some of my priorities:
- To always advocate for Great Lakes excellence, based on science, policy, and collaborative decision making.
- To contribute to the renewal, protection and sustainability of natural and cultural heritage features locally, regionally and globally by advancing the bond between science, engineering, policy, and society.
- To be a leader in environmental regeneration through innovative partnerships and strategic linkages among environment, economic, and social systems.
- To ensure that environmental vitality remains on the societal and political agenda by clearly articulating and evaluating ecosystem-based policies and programs.

She is a frequent guest for media interview in print, radio and TV formats on matters relating to Great Lakes excellence
Dr. Krantzberg is a Professor and Program lead for the Masters in Engineering and Public Policy Program in the Walter G Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology at McMaster University offering Canada’s first Master’s Degree in Engineering and Public Policy. Gail completed her M.Sc. and Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in environmental science and freshwaters. She worked for the Ontario Ministry of Environment from 1988 to 2001, as Coordinator of Great Lakes Programs, and Senior Policy Advisor on Great Lakes. In her tenure there she was intensely engaged in binational Great Lakes science and policy venue, president of the International Association of Great Lakes Research, Board Member of numerous Water Realted nonprofits, member of the International Joint Commission’s Water Quality Board, Sediment Priority Action Committee, Indicators Implementation Task Force, and is currently . Canadian Co-Chair of the IJC’s Science Advisory Board Science Priority Committee. Dr. Krantzberg was the Director of the Great Lakes Regional Office of the Joint Commission from 2001 to 2005. In 2007, she was appointed as an adjunct faculty member of the United Nations University Institute for Water and Environmental Health and participated in the twinning of the Laurentian and African Great Lakes (principally Lake Victoria).

Gail enjoys family, photography, gardening, peace in the woods and tranquillity in a canoe.
Dr. Krantzberg was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 2022.
In 2023 Dr. Krantzberg was awarded a multimillion, binational grant to co-lead the Global Centre for Climate Change Impacts on Transboundary Waters, as a partnership among 10 universities and three Indigenous Nations, one in Canda and one in the USA. The Global Center is funded by the National Science Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. The Global Center finds its home at the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) in partnership with McMaster University, Toronto Metropolitan University, the Six Nations of the Grand River, Brock University, and Wilfrid Laurier University.
The project further benefits from partnerships with esteemed institutions such as Cornell University, the College of Menominee Nation, the Red Lake Nation, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. https://seas.umich.edu/global-center
In 2024 Dr. Krantzberg was awarded a New Frontiers in Research Fund grant to lead the Climate Change Adaptation and Resiliency Strategy network from Canada, which partners with the USA, UK, Germany and Africa to improve responses to climate induced migration of at-risk human populations.
