Overview

Specific Research Activities

My current field of research is residual stresses, abrasive waterjet machining, micro-scale cutting, burr formation, chip curling, “green” machining and high speed/performance cutting. A key component of the research approach is to employ finite element analysis to a) study the highly complex deformation process under large strain and high strain rates at the macro and micro scale levels and b) process optimize to improve productivity and enhance part quality.

Topics that are of current interest include:

  • Modelling the effects of material properties, thermal and mechanical loading on residual stresses and fatigue performance
  • Numerical and experimental investigate the effects of workpiece microstructure during macro and micro scale cutting
  • Development of multi-physics model to simulate the abrasive water jet machining process
  • Experimentally investigate the effects of chemical composition and abrasive particle size on tool performance
  • Develop Arbitrary Lagrangian and Eulerian (ALE) technique to simulate conventional and Hard broaching operation
