McMaster University’s Engineering Co-op and Career Services (ECCS) unit is ringing in a new academic year with a new identity: the Centre for Career Growth and Experience (the Centre).
With a mandate of supporting undergraduate and graduate students in achieving their career goals, the Centre encourages students to “invest in future you” through its delivery of the province’s second largest engineering co-op program, career development and experiential learning opportunities, and support more than 100 student clubs and teams.
“Growth is what we strive for with our students and meaningful experiences – co-op, career guidance, skill and professional development, joining a club or team – are crucial to fostering it,” says Stephanie Harper, the Centre’s Associate Director. “Our commitment to student success starts with early and ongoing engagement to support their skill development and career success”
In the 2023-24 academic year, more students than ever participated in co-op, engaged in clubs and teams and accessed career workshops and networking events.
By the numbers:
- 4,762 co-op work terms were completed by nearly 3,000 students, supported by more than 1,300 employers
- 93% of undergraduate co-op students were enrolled in co-op
- More than 1,500 students gained experience participating in events hosted by clubs and teams.
- More than 250 virtual and in-person workshops and events hosted
“Students seek out McMaster Engineering because of our established co-op program and the diversity of career-development experiences we offer,” says Heather Sheardown, Dean of Engineering. “To meet the rising demand, the unit must evolve. I have no doubt the Centre for Career Growth and Experience will continue to deliver services and supports that meet the needs of students and employers.”
