The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published by ShanghaiRanking, rated 14 McMaster Engineering academic disciplines among the best in the world.
In the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2020, 11 McMaster Engineering disciplines ranked within the top 10 in Canada, with metallurgical engineering securing the number one spot.
Internationally, civil engineering ranked 33rd overall, making it one of only two subject areas at McMaster University ranked within the top 50 worldwide. Clinical medicine ranked 46th in the world.
Transportation science & technology increased its rank to 51st internationally, moving it within the top 75 worldwide.
The other top-ranked engineering subjects at McMaster include civil engineering (3rd in Canada), water resources (4th), transportation science and technology (5th), nanoscience & nanotechnology (6th), computer science & engineering (6th), mechanical engineering (7th), electrical & electronic engineering (8th), materials science & engineering (9th), energy science & engineering (10th) and chemical engineering (10th).

ARWU uses a series of indicators, such as number of overall papers, citations in top journals, international collaborations and other metrics to determine yearly rankings.
More than 4,000 universities are ranked in 54 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. McMaster was ranked as one of the world’s top institutions in all 54 subject areas.
