McMaster attends first joint workshop in collaboration with University of Toronto and University of Tokyo

McMaster University, University of Toronto and University of Tokyo collaborated at their first joint workshop.

Engineering for a Brighter Future, was the theme of the first joint workshop between the University of Toronto, McMaster University and the University of Tokyo, which was held at University of Toronto and McMaster University from June 26 to 28, 2019. The purpose of this workshop was to make new connections and to facilitate research and education collaborations between both Canadian partners and the University of Tokyo.

The workshop included sessions on “Engineering for A Brighter Tomorrow”, “Materials and Processes for A Sustainable World”, “Energy for Future” as well as a dedicated Graduate Student poster session.

The delegates were greeted by the Consul General, Consulate of Japan in Toronto, and representatives from Natural Resources Canada. Representatives from Canadian and Japanese funding agencies reviewed opportunities for funding joint research projects. Representative from the three universities discussed strategies for enhancing research and education interactions. The technical program included presentations on cutting-edge topics in the areas of engineering physics, nuclear and solar energy, material sciences, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. The highlight of the meeting was the graduate student session which consisted of a two-minute oral poster preview followed by a poster presentation. This significantly encouraged all graduate students discuss their research and build new contacts between the three universities. 

The essential discussion to strengthen the partnership was conducted and the workshop was successfully completed. The 2nd workshop will be held at the University of Tokyo in 2020.
