From international co-op placements to creating PPE prototypes, this Loran Scholar is adding author to his list of achievements.
Third-year iBioMed HESE student, John Milkovich, is first author of a paper on “Restructuring Skin Cancer Care in Ontario.”
Overall, these projects were fulfilling, testing my communication and collaborative capabilities that I adopted from my HESE iBioMed experience in a new virtual world.
It’s been an exciting year for third-year Health, Engineering Science and Entrepreneurship (HESE) student John Milkovich. From creating prototypes for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), to rewarding co-op experiences (his first co-op placement being with Global Pathways School in India), this Loran Scholar is adding author to his list of achievements.
Milkovich’s second co-op placement was with the Surgical Oncology Program (SOP) at Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) (OH(CCO)). During this placement Milkovich had the opportunity to be first author of the paper “Restructuring Skin Cancer Care in Ontario: A Provincial Plan.” Milkovich explains the inspiration behind this paper.
“This past summer, I completed the second term of my coop placement with the Surgical Oncology Program (SOP) at Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) (OH(CCO)). I was really fortunate to work with a welcoming and supportive team that made the virtual work environment engaging and productive. For this particular project, I worked under the tutelage of Dr. Frances Wright to describe a new approach to streamline and create consistency in the quality of skin cancer care in Ontario. In retrospect, I can’t believe how much I learned about Ontario’s health system and the role of public health agencies, and this is certainly a field that I can see myself pursuing one day. The management and mismanagement of the pandemic really brought home the importance of public policy and in particular when it applies to health.”
In addition to this publication, Milkovich also contributed to the paper “Clearing the Surgical Backlog Caused by COVID-19 in Ontario: a Time Series Modelling Study.”
Milkovich explains “We described in a well-publicized article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal the magnitude of surgical backlogs and the projected timing required to clear the backlog, providing rigorous modelling techniques. The paper was cited by 29 news outlets, including Global News, the National Post, the Globe and Mail, and CBC.”
He adds “Overall, these projects were fulfilling, testing my communication and collaborative capabilities that I adopted from my HESE iBioMed experience in a new virtual world.”
The iBioMed Program would like to congratulate Milkovich on these achievements and wishes him further success as he continues his studies in iBioMed’s HESE program.
