Mac Eng Take Our Kid to Work Day 2024

Welcome, Grade 9 students!

McMaster University is thrilled to welcome Grade 9 students for Take Our Kids to Work Day! This special day offers students a unique opportunity to shadow family or friends at their work, explore various career paths and gain invaluable insights into the world of work. 

Take Our Kids to Work Day is more than just a day off school. It’s an opportunity for students to experience the workplace and responsibilities of different professions, prompt discussions about future education and aspirations, and get involved in various programming.

Important note: The following morning and afternoon programming are not mandatory for students’ participation in Take Our Kids to Work Day at McMaster. However, if you are planning on bringing your student to campus, the student’s parent/guardian is required to complete the Human Resources registration form for Take Our Kids to Work Day. 

Morning programming available on campus

  1. Human Resources Services will host morning programming from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.. For more details and to register for the morning session, please visit the HR registration page. Note that registration for the HR-led morning program closes on Wednesday, October 23, but the form remains open till October 28 if your student is not participating in this morning programming but is coming to campus.
  1. The McMaster Nuclear Reactor invites students to join them for a tour from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.. This registration is open while space is available.  

Afternoon programming by the Faculty of Engineering 

The Faculty of Engineering is planning an engaging afternoon session for participating Grade 9 students between 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., which includes a STEM-focused workshop led by our Community Outreach team, opportunities to connect with some of our student-run clubs and attending a 2pm show at the Planetarium.  

  • Open to all employees who are caregivers, family members or family friends of a Grade 9 student. You do not need to be a parent of a Grade 9 student and are welcome to support a Grade 9 student in your life for Take Our Kid to Work Day.  
  • Registration deadline:
    • New registrations – end of day October 28
    • If you already registered with Human Resources and are adding Mac Eng programming additionally to your day, you have until end of day October 30 to complete Mac Eng registration. 

More details about the final schedule, including the meeting and pickup locations, will be shared with all registrants closer to the event date.

FAQs

Take Our Kids to Work Day is open to all employees in our community. If you are a caregiver, family member or family friend of a Grade 9 student, you can sponsor them for the day!  

It is not mandatory to participate in either of the programming offered by various campus partners if you have a student shadowing you for the day. Both programming is optional but registration is required. However, the student’s parent/guardian is required to complete the Human Resources Services form for Take Our Kids to Work Day if their student is coming to campus.   

If you are not attending the programming available, or you have the time between morning and afternoon programing, your student should with you. Throughout the day, you may wish, but are not limited to, to have your student shadow the work you do, offer them a more specialized tour of your work, have lunch with them, etc. 

Please ensure that you have connected with your supervisor to receive permission to bring your student into your workspace if your student is shadowing you.  

Prior to coming to campus, students must also complete the required safety training and the Children in the Workplace Program. 

Adherence to additional safety requirements in your workplace are the sponsor’s responsibility. 

The HR programming has some light breakfast available at the start of the day.  

Lunch is not provided to participating students. Any lunch plans should be coordinated between you and your student.

Students are welcome to bring snacks and reusable water bottles.
