Distinguished University Professor Jamal Deen has been elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Academician group, China’s highest academic title in science and technology.
He is one of 20 “foreign experts” to be awarded the title among 64 Chinese nationals in 2019, and only the second Canadian to receive the title. The CAS awards the lifelong honour every two years.
“I’m truly humbled and grateful to receive such a prestigious and high honour,” says Deen, a Distinguished University Professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering and the McMaster School of Biomedical Engineering.
“It’s a recognition of the exceptional achievements of many students, researchers and collaborators I’ve been fortunate to work with in my career.”
Deen is also a Senior Canada Research Chair in information technology, and director of McMaster’s Micro- and Nano-Systems Laboratory.
He was recently appointed to the Order of Canada and served as the President of the Academy of Science at The Royal Society of Canada from 2015 to 2017.
At McMaster, his research specialties lie in electrical engineering and applied physics. Deen is an associate member of the department of computing and software and the department of engineering physics.
The induction ceremony for the newest academicians was scheduled for June 2020, but has been postponed.
“The new academicians are expected to keep pushing the envelope of science in their respective fields, train and promote quality young talents, provide constructive advice for policies and projects, and be a role model for academic integrity and honesty,” said Bai Chunli, CAS President in a news release.
