Overview
Wide bandgap devices are becoming important for power electronics for many reasons, including increasing efficiency and reducing weight and volume. Due to the high switching speeds of these new semiconductor devices, there can be severe EMI issues for electronic converters powering electric motors in electric vehicles and appliances, including common-mode emissions, motor terminal voltage ringing, and bearing currents. This talk will focus on the problems and the potential solutions for SiC and GaN power electronics. It will explain how common-mode emissions occur, how we define the common-voltage spectrum as a function of switching frequency, and how the high dv/dt voltages increase the common-mode emissions. Different EMI mitigation techniques will be discussed through experimental examples, including new power electronic inverter topologies.
