This year, Heather Sheardown was announced as the first ever female Dean for the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster. The Dean of Engineering is an academic and administrative leader responsible for growing the Faculty’s national and international reach and stature. 9. Doctoral degree recipient Barry Hill launches Indigenous engineering student scholarship
Distinguished alumnus Barry Hill, who received an honorary doctorate degree from McMaster University at spring convocation, is establishing The William Barry Hill Scholarship to support upper-year level Indigenous engineering students.
8. Mechanical engineering professor Andrew Gadsden leads McMaster collaboration with NASA
Mechanical Engineering Associate Professor Andrew Gadsden and his award-winning team built and programmed a robotic telescope mount instrument subsystem for NASA’s air-LUSI project to measure moonlight.
7. Mac Eng teams up with community partners to teach toddlers STEM fundamentals
For the first time in Canada, McMaster Engineering’s Community Outreach is working to amplify developing the fundamentals of STEM learning experiences for children and for their caregivers through a variety of programs that include facilitated story time and plays, take-home STEM kits and professional development for front line staff. This exciting, cutting-edge work harnesses the power of community collaboration to support children and families where they live and to spread the message that engineering is for everyone.

4. Nobel Laureates Donna Strickland and Myron Scholes honoured at street naming event
On October 4, Donna Strickland, Eng Phys alumna and Nobel laureate, returned to campus to celebrate the naming of Strickland Way in honour on Nobel Week.
3. Mechanical engineering alumni win National James Dyson Award
Eden Lazar, Clayton MacNeil, Caitlin Kuzler and Afeef Khan received the top honour prize for their invention called Taco, a knife guide tool that helps provide a safe way for Parkinson’s patients to slice food.
2. McMaster Engineering graduate honoured with the 2022 James Dyson Global Sustainability Award
Mechanical engineering graduate Swaleh Owais and teammate Yang Cheng win top honour for the creation of Polyformer, a machine that recycles plastic bottles into 3D printer filament.
1. Women make up 40 per cent of McMaster Engineering’s incoming class
In the last six years, the representation of women students increased by 18 per cent at Mac Eng. This year, McMaster Engineering has reached a new equity milestone, with 40 per cent of incoming undergraduate students being women.
