Sometimes you just need a safe spot to talk.
McMaster Engineering students have access to a range of helpful resources, including TalkSpot, a mental health service tailored to meet the distinct needs of engineering students.
To offer insight into TalkSpot’s comprehensive support, TalkSpot Counsellor and Occupational Therapist Kaely Danahy answers some questions around how TalkSpot is designed to assist students throughout their academic journey.
What is TalkSpot, and how does it benefit Mac Eng students seeking mental health support?
TalkSpot is a mental health service that provides confidential consultations uniquely tailored to the needs of engineering students through same-day appointments. Same-day appointments can offer perspective, collaborative problem-solving or triage support to address whatever issue or challenge is most important in the moment. TalkSpot also provides wellness programming throughout the year to promote and support all dimensions of student wellness.
What are some common concerns or challenges that students bring to TalkSpot, and how does the service help them navigate these issues?
Students lead busy and complex lives, so the challenges they bring to TalkSpot are diverse. Students may request support on stress or performance-anxiety, decision-making during key life events, feelings of failure or relationship challenges. Many students come in with the question, “is something wrong with me?” (The answer is no!) We explore whatever issue is underneath that concern. Any student with a specific problem who would like to talk it through with someone or who is experiencing academic or personal issues but unsure whether they warrant professional support, would be a good fit for TalkSpot.
Some issues can be addressed during one or two TalkSpot appointments through safe, empathetic collaboration. Others may benefit from ongoing support with other services. Regardless, TalkSpot can get you started and connect you directly with the services that make the most sense for you.
What sets TalkSpot apart from other mental health services on campus?
Counsellors with both TalkSpot and the Student Wellness Centre are trained mental health clinicians from regulated health professions (governed by legislative framework and colleges which regulate the professions in the public interest). You might also refer to us as therapists.
All McMaster students also have access to the Student Wellness Centre where they can meet with a counsellor and in some cases, participate in regular and repeating appointments. TalkSpot is only offered to students within the Faculty of Engineering as a convenient, same-day service and does not provide pre-scheduled, repeating appointments. Students can meet for an appointment with a trained counsellor who is familiar with the unique challenges facing engineering students on the same day that they decide they would like support.
For new students planning to use TalkSpot, what can they expect during an appointment?
Depending on student preference, sessions take place via videoconference or in a private office with wide, cushioned chairs. The office door has a blind that can be pulled down for privacy. During appointments, I listen closely to student concerns, give space for discussion and collaborate on a mutual plan that will guide our work together. I may present my perspective on an issue, review coping skills, or outline suggestions for resources or supports. Every appointment looks a little bit different depending on the student and their needs.
How can students make the most out of their TalkSpot experience?
I think it’s important to be mindful of the pressure that comes with placing an expectation on yourself to maximize every experience. Students often struggle to be fully present in the moment, so please consider TalkSpot an expectation-free zone; just showing up is enough.
