Program highlights

Many technologists find, after working in industry for a few years, that they need additional education and training in order to be more effective in their positions and to advance professionally. These additional needs are concerned with both general leadership and supervision skills (i.e. management) and advanced technical knowledge and skills.

If you would like to supplement your career with additional education but do not want to upgrade to a degree, the diploma or certificate program is for you! The certificate/diploma programs are designed to meet these needs by utilizing Bachelor of Technology courses, which are being offered evenings and on Saturdays.

Program learning objectives

These programs incorporate the following learning objectives:

  • Develop and interpret financial systems used by technology organizations
  • Develop an understanding of human behaviour and interpersonal skills for analyzing organizational situations
  • Understand and apply principles of entrepreneurship for emerging businesses in the Canadian context
  • Know and be able to use project management methodology
  • Develop additional leadership and/or advanced technology skills
  • Conduct oneself in an ethical manner when making decisions

Admission requirements

Academic Prerequisites

Students who wish to enter either program must have at least one of:

  1. A recognized degree in technology, science or engineering
  2. An advanced diploma from an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology
  3. Equivalent qualifications as assessed by the certificate/diploma admissions committee

Admission will be considered on a case-by-case basis and is not guaranteed.

Students who complete the Technology Leadership Certificate cannot use it as a bridge program for the Bachelor of Technology Degree Program.

1. Complete the Application Form. Email the completed form to btechdc@mcmaster.ca.

2. Arrange for your official transcripts for all post-secondary work completed to be sent electronically to btechdc@mcmaster.ca or mailed in a sealed enveloped directly from the issuing institution to the address below:

In order to register for courses each term you will need to complete a Certificate Registration Form. You may not submit this form unless you have received an Offer of Admission to a Certificate Program.

Students registered in the Technology Leadership Certificate Program must complete five required courses (15 units).

McMaster University’s Faculty of Engineering and Mohawk College’s School of Engineering Technology have partnered to offer skills-based engineering technology education at the university level.

Our one of a kind certificate in Technology and certificate in Technology Leadership allow those who have already completed a college or university diploma or degree and are working in the industry to upgrade their technical and managerial skills with evening and weekend courses.

The McMaster-Mohawk Bachelor of Technology partnership is the first of its kind in Canada. You won’t find a program like this anywhere else!

Classes are typically held at McMaster University in the state-of-the-art Engineering Technology Building (ETB); however, some courses may be offered at McMaster Automotive Research Centre (MARC) on Longwood Road South. The BTech program administrative offices, as well as academic advising services and co-op and career services are located on the McMaster University campus.

Students will have access to clubs and student organizations, as well as academic and support facilities at both McMaster University and Mohawk College.

Students are conferred a certificate from McMaster University in Technology or Technology Leadership.

There is a two year (six term) time limit for you to complete the program.

Students who are working while studying should not take more than 2 or 3 courses per academic term.

Classes are offered one day per week, Monday to Friday for three hours (6:30 pm – 9:30pm) and Saturday (9:00 am  – 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm).

Students in the Degree Completion Program have already completed a university degree or college advanced diploma in a science or technology field. Our Degree Completion Program allows these students to bridge to a four-year BTech Degree through evening and weekend study.

If you meet our admission requirements you may be eligible for our Degree Completion Program. You would have to apply on OUAC for eligibility to our program. Courses successfully completed as part of your certificate or diploma program may be applied towards your degree.
