For Summer Wang, Muniya Fallah and Toluwaleke Agunbiade, receiving an entrance scholarship to the Faculty of Engineering was a pivotal factor in their decision to attend McMaster University.
These scholarships provided them with the financial freedom to explore new opportunities, engage in extracurricular activities, and pursue diverse pathways while studying. Keep reading to discover how these students have been able to thrive and make the most of their university experience with the support of McMaster Engineering scholarships.
Summer Wang, Bachelor of Engineering
As an international student from China, Summer knew tuition support would help alleviate the financial burden of paying for postsecondary school abroad. “I was fortunate to receive a relatively high amount in scholarships from McMaster Engineering compared to other institutions like Waterloo or McGill,” she says. “Considering both the scholarships and the great program at McMaster, I decided to join the Fireball Family.”
Since joining McMaster, Summer has fully embraced her new environment. She joined McMaster’s Synchronized Swimming Club, mentored youth through Empowerment Square, volunteered to take care of alpacas at a local farm during Reading Week and participated in a digital hackathon competition in January where her team designed an app that supports international students with their mental health.
“The scholarship encourages me to continue working hard to pursue my academic goals and a higher standard for myself,” Summer says. “At the same time, it encouraged me to help others and try to make my new community a better place.”
Summer shares these words of wisdom to high school students making their postsecondary decision:
Just follow your heart! I’m sure you’ll love it here at Mac.
Muniya Fallah, Computer Science
A scholarship gave Muniya the confidence to choose McMaster for her Computer Science studies. It also provided her with the financial security to explore extracurricular activities and new pathways without the constant worry of funding her education.
She’s volunteering with the Sound of MacMusic Club, teaching piano to students and staying active through fitness classes at Pulse. “Being involved in these activities has made my experience at Mac even more enjoyable,” she says.
Muniya shares these words of wisdom to high school students making their postsecondary decision:
Explore McMaster’s website and see all the opportunities available, from academics to clubs and other fun activities. Talking to current students can also give you a better idea of what life at Mac is like. McMaster has a lot to offer, and I believe it’s a great place for students to learn, grow and succeed.
Toluwaleke Agunbiade, Chemical Engineering
With his sights set on becoming a Chemical Engineering, Toluwaleke credits a scholarship as an invaluable tool in helping him pursue this goal.
“I was eager to join the McMaster Engineering community and receiving this support significantly alleviated financial barriers that might have otherwise prevented me from doing so,” he says.
Honing a passion for renewable energy, Toluwaleke has focused his extracurricular involvement in related fields. He’s a member of the McMaster Chem-E Car, McMaster Design League, the Battery Workforce Challenge and the McMaster Engineering Society. He also is a community volunteer with the Income Tax Program in Hamilton.
Toluwaleke shares these words of wisdom to high school students making their postsecondary decision:
I highly encourage you to choose McMaster. Here, you’ll not only receive a high-quality education but also become part of a welcoming and supportive community that will be with you throughout your journey. McMaster offers numerous resources to help ease your transition to university, and you’ll always find someone ready to assist you with enthusiasm and a smile!
