McMaster Engineering alumna Hoda ElMaraghy has been awarded one of Canada’s highest civilian honours.
The distinguished university professor at the University of Windsor and Director of the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Centre has been appointed to the Order of Canada.
ElMaraghy was the first female dean of engineering in Canada (University of Windsor) when she was appointed in 1994. She was also the first woman in Canada to obtain a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, which she earned from McMaster University in 1976.
ElMaraghy, who also earned her Masters in Mechanical Engineering from McMaster, was a professor at McMaster and founding director of the Flexible Manufacturing Systems Centre before joining the University of Windsor. She received the Order of Ontario in 2016.
There have been many important milestones throughout my career including many recognitions of excellence in research, teaching and service and national and international awards, but perhaps one of the important achievements has been being the first woman Dean of Engineering in Canada paving the way for others to follow.
Her research on flexible manufacturing has helped manufacturers around the world adapt and respond to market changes. She is the Canada Research Chair in Manufacturing Systems.
ElMaraghy was one of 114 new appointments to the Order of Canada announced today.
“Created in 1967, the Order of Canada recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation,” reads the announcement from the Governor General’s office. “Those who bear the Order’s iconic snowflake insignia have changed our nation’s measure of success and, through the sum of their accomplishments, have helped us build a better Canada.”
