McMaster University aims to achieve a net-zero carbon campus by 2050, with a key challenge being the central plant’s reliance on natural gas for steam and chilled water production. Another major natural gas consumption source in McMaster University other than boilers is the cogeneration unit which contributes to 30 – 40% of overall CO2. Team #6: PolyCycle

As sustainability is becoming increasingly important in many industries, there is an increased demand for alternatives to traditional plastics; this places polylactic acid (PLA) at the forefront of the bioplastics market due to its renewability and competitive pricing. However, the limited recyclability of PLA restricts their full integration into a circular material economy because of mechanical integrity loss, thermal degradation, and generally decreased tensile strength associated with each recycling cycle. The main objective of the experiment is to improve the recyclability of rPLA over multiple reprocessing cycles by mixing it with polymers like amorphous PHA and chain extenders.

This project focuses on improving the recyclability of plastic beverage bottles by blending recycled PET (rPET) and PLA with the use of additives. Team #8: Hemp Fusion

The use of hemp in bioplastics is limited due to the cost of shipping, thus a modular system for farmers needs to be designed which can micronize and pelletize hemp with a biopolymer resin on site, making an accessible and sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics. This system needs to be user-friendly and will prioritize safety and economic feasibility.

Team #9: Mini-MBR Team 9

Under a partnership with Fibracast Ltd., the goal of this project is to design a functional, transportable, small-scale MBR that will be used to treat wastewater on-site from existing sources. Using Fibracast’s own ultrafiltration membrane, FibrePlateTM, and all necessary piping, alarms, and controls, the designed small-scale system will treat post-bioreactor flow to produce clean filtrate.

Lean, Idris, Agda and Rocq are functional programming languages widely used as proof assistants. However, current user experience with these languages suggests that there are many low-level deficiencies. In this project, the aim is to systematically test these proof assistant languages to highlight potential areas for improving their performance by creating an automated code generator that generates tests written in these languages of increasing size and measures the time and memory complexity.

VisuAssist is a web-based application that provides real-time environmental descriptions to assist visually impaired users. Team #16: MeetingBot

In the modern workplace, online meetings generate valuable data—audio, video, transcripts, and metadata—that can power automation tools like meeting summarizers, note-takers, and AI assistants. However, current solutions for accessing this data are proprietary and costly, limiting accessibility for startups and independent developers.

Our project provides an open-source, low-cost API that enables developers to create and manage meeting bots across platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet. These bots can automatically join meetings, capture key data, and make it accessible via an API, eliminating the need for manual intervention.

Team #17: Cookie

Gin Rummy has been one of the most popular two-person card games for over a century. This project recreates the game electronically but with a difference. The entire game is played and scored in the dozen number base —“base twelve”— with a dozenal deck of 64 (5 dozen 4) cards. Dozenal has been researched for a few centuries as a number base superior to decimal (“base ten”) mainly because of its abundance of non-trivial factors, 2, 3, 4 and 6, compared to those of decimal, only 2 and 5, with five not being particularly useful. The project involves dealing with the cards with animation and sorting them with mild animation, enabling the play of the cards, and scoring and presenting the results. The focus will be on implementing the new game logic, perfect user interactions and seamless user experience.

Our project focuses on developing a secure invisible watermarking system for digital image protection. To enhance security and ownership verification, the system integrates blockchain technology for managing timestamps and keys, ensuring authenticity and tamper resistance. With features for watermark embedding, extraction, and key management, this project provides a reliable solution for digital content authentication, supporting standard image formats like PNG and JPEG.

Team #1: BANDwidth

Battery state of charge (SOC) estimation is challenging, requiring specialized algorithms. Standardized testing is necessary to determine which of the hundreds of SOC estimation approaches proposed yearly are the best. This project will expand upon an existing, early stage online SOC estimation algorithm testing tool. The tool is Matlab based, receives submissions through a Google form, and tests algorithms in serial on a server at McMaster. This approach is not scalable though since testing each algorithm takes an hour or more and the software regularly crashes due to unhandled errors from the submitted algorithms. The project objectives are to create: (1) A cloud based software implementation which can test multiple algorithm submissions in parallel, (2) A secure algorithm submission portal which prevents malware attacks etc., (3) A web interface which reports and compares algorithm performance (see Kaggle as an example), (4) A robust version of the model testing software which can handle any error. These software improvements will allow the testing tool to be scaled up to having several hundred active users.

For future mobile robots with arms to be able to help people at home (or elsewhere), they need to be aware of the spaces occupied by the people around them. Sensors, such as Microsoft’s Kinect, can produce color 3D “point clouds” of the scene in front of the robot, and skeleton tracking software based on these point clouds has been developed for gaming. However, the results provided by skeleton tracking software are inadequate since they only produce stick figures and do not provide the reliability required for the safe interactions of people and robots. The software challenge this project is to develop a system that can reliably detect and track humans in a 3D point cloud space, even when partially obscured, to enable safe human-robot interactions in real-time scenarios.

Roommates often complain about cleanliness of communal spaces and have a difficult time holding each other accountable. Shared living spaces often cause friction in communicating expectations and frustrations. This application includes a suite of tools to manage accountability amongst rommates. The main feature uses computer vision to detect the cleanliness of indoor environments, quantify who is creating/cleaning messes, and relay that information to occupants. It essentially serves as a mediator for student houses. Other tools include a bill splitter for shared expenses, a chore scheduler to keep track of responsibilities, and a chatbot to push SMS notifications to a house group chat and help members stay on top of their obligations.

This will also be applied in the triage process meaning the whole patient journey will be sped up.
