Incoming students build professional skills at Co-Op Kick-Off Day

August 2, 2017

Before even setting foot in their first class, 200 incoming first-year students gained valuable professional skills at McMaster Engineering’s inaugural, Co-Op Kick-Off Day.

At the July 28 event, students participated in a host of professional workshops, and had an opportunity to learn about the many co-op and career support services available through McMaster Engineering.

The workshops, led my members of the Engineering Co-op & Career Services team, focused on job search techniques, cover letter and resume writing, interview preparation and professionalism.

“Our team of advisers are not only there to lead students to their first co-op but also hopefully to that long-term internship,” said Daniel Picone, Career Development & Relationship Manager, Engineering Co-op & Career Services.

For many first year students, their first co-op will be their first introduction to the job world. Career advisers facilitate that introduction. “I see myself as the employer’s voice to students and students' voice to employers. So that’s really the great thing about our office and our role,” explained Rachelle Ireson, Career Development & Relationship Manager. “It’s about being able to start those conversations and make meaningful connections.”

Justin Prez, who will be entering the Integrated Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences (iBioMed) program in September, learned how to bolster his resume and cover letter at the event. “I learned how to structure a cover letter and resume in a way that appeals to the employer. Now I will have something that will catch their eye right away and help me stand out from other candidates.”

“I didn’t really know this whole other world of opportunities existed. It’s great to see co-op can open so many doors for us,” added Chelsea Angeles, who will also be starting in the iBioMed program in September.
